10 Things To Do In Ouseburn

Ouseburn is pretty much my favourite area of Newcastle. With a few cracking pubs, a handful of fantastic restaurants and lots to see and do, there's a reason the area is a bit of a hot spot.

10 Things To Do In Ouseburn

I found it difficult narrowing this list down to just 10 places - let me know if I've missed (or mentioned) your favourite.

1 - Enjoy a Long Brunch at Kiln

10 Things To Do In Ouseburn - brunch at Kiln

Kiln is a working pottery studio providing crockery to some of the UK's top restaurants. It's one of my goals to fill my kitchen with their pieces. You can often watch the potters at work and browse a few items for sale when you visit.

Kiln is well-known for its fantastic brunches. Their menus are small and a little bit different to the norm but everything is usually wholesome, beautifully presented and tastes wonderful.

The vibe is laid back in style with comfy sofas with board games piled by the coffee table, stripped back interiors & plenty of plants to add a spot of colour to the otherwise pretty industrial setting. You'll find a real mix of clientele from freelancers with their laptops to families, couples and friends catching up.

2 - Re-visit Your Favourite Children's Books at Seven Stories

10 Things To Do In Ouseburn - children's books at Seven Stories

Seven Stories is somewhere I have spent a lot of rainy days with the kids as they've grown up. I have so many happy memories of their various exhibitions over the years with the re-opening of the Harry Potter-themed loft, Bears! and The Tiger Who Came to Tea exhibition particularly standing out.

With ever-changing exhibitions, regular storytelling and new books to discover, a wonderful children's bookshop, a fantastic programme of events and a lovely little cafe, it's hard not to love a trip to Seven Stories.

3 - Catch a Gig at The Cluny

10 Things To Do In Ouseburn - Catch a gig at The Cluny

The Cluny sits in the heart of Ouseburn and is a popular venue for live music in Newcastle - there always seems to be someone playing.

The food is cracking too! All homemade and filling - just what you want from a pub lunch or bar snacks. They are welcoming to kids and dogs and it's just a brilliant neighbourhood pub that I can't speak about highly enough.

4 - Enjoy Contemporary Art at The Biscuit Factory

10 Things To Do In Ouseburn - The Biscuit Factory

The UK's largest independent art gallery is always worth a visit. Entry is free and there's a vast collection of art on display and available to purchase.

As well as the gallery, you'll find factory kitchen on level one which serves up delicious light bites, cakes and coffee. There's a roof terrace if the weather's nice and a small toy area for children (as featured in my 'Free Indoor Play Areas in Newcastle' post.)

The Biscuit Factory has really ramped up their events and workshop offering this year and it's always worth checking their website to see what's coming up.

5 - Discover the History of Victoria Tunnel

The Victoria Tunnel is a preserved 19th century waggonway that goes underneath the city of Newcastle. It was also used as an air raid shelter for Newcastle residents during the second world war so as you can imagine, has one or two stories to tell and a fascinating history.

You can book to take a guided tour of this award-winning attraction and learn all about it's past - there are themed tours throughout the year too as well as tours specifically tailored to families.

6 - Say Hi to the Animals at Ouseburn Farm

10 Things To Do In Ouseburn - Ouseburn Farm

Ouseburn Farm is a community farm in the heart of Ouseburn Valley. It's FREE to visit (donations very welcome) and you can drop in and meet some of the animals there.

There are usually pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, cows, turtles, birds and guinea pigs/ rabbits.

The farm has it's own community cafe serving delicious homemade food and runs fantastic events from silent discos to supper clubs and animal handling sessions.

7 - Enjoy Indian Street Food at Thali Tray

Thali Tray is a much talked about Thali restaurant in the arches under Byker Bridge. It's *the* place to go for Indian Street Food in Newcastle. Grab a seat and pick a Thali Tray which is made up of 6 different elements for around a tenner.

You can grab a craft beer and toast marshmallows around the communal fire pits afterwards.

8 - Share a Sunday lunch platter at the Cookhouse

10 Things To Do In Ouseburn - roast chicken at the cookhouse

Sunday Lunch at The Cookhouse is a family affair. The best way to enjoy lunch here is to order a full roast chicken and dig in.
The Cookhouse pride themselves on using local suppliers and run a fantastic programme of foodie events too.

9 - Satisfy your Sweet Tooth at Proven Doughnuts

10 Things To Do In Ouseburn - Proven Doughnuts

You'll find the Proven Goods Co. in Hoults Yard. Their small-batch handmade doughnuts and indulgent hot chocolates mean that there's nearly always a queue here. They usually sell out too so I'd recommend getting down early.

10 - Stay the Night at Hotel Du Vin

10 Things To Do In Ouseburn - Hotel Du Vin Newcastle Suite

Hotel Du Vin is home to what I think is the best hotel suite in Newcastle. Their rooms are beautifully designed with lots of indulgent treats and they have a fantastic bar if you fancy dropping in for cocktails.

Let me know your favourite spots in Ouseburn.
