Destination 1850 : A Canny Place to Kill Time at Newcastle Central Station

This post is based on a visit in 2020. Please check with venue direct for the most up to date menus and opening times.

I recently had 45 minutes to spare before a train journey at Newcastle Central Station and remembered a few people had recommended Destination 1850 so I decided to pop in and give it a try.

Destination 1850 : A Canny Place to Kill Time at Newcastle Central Station

Located at the entrance to the train station (before you go through the ticket barriers) and open from 7am - midnight (food served 8am - 10pm), it is in a super convenient location if you are early for a train / meeting someone at the station.

I was really impressed and left feeling like it is one of those places which goes above and beyond.

First of all, the service was friendly and quick. I am guessing most people visiting here will have a train to catch so it is good to know that speed is given priority. You can opt to eat in or takeaway and there are grab and go items on the counter or you can order from the kitchen.

The menu includes small plates, brunch items, sharing boards, wraps and loaded fries. There is also a full bar to choose from with a full range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

I have noticed these Katsu Loaded Fries shared a few times on Social Media so had to try them. They really hit the spot and were the perfect comfort food before my train journey. A pretty decent portion for £6.95 too.

Destination 1850 go above and beyond in a few different ways for me:

1 - The seats are heated! This was honestly such a treat and really made me feel cosy in what is usually a cold train station.

2 - The staff were so lovely - bringing my coffee over, checking to see if I wanted the light near my table switched on and generally just being nice.

3 - There are plug sockets by the seats for you to use and charge your phone / plug your laptop in.

4 - The food was WAY better than Burger King inside the station (and around the same price).

5 - The decor is lovely and welcoming.

6 - They are dog-friendly.

Next time you are early for a train/waiting to meet someone at the station, I can definitely recommend Destination 1850. Gone are the days of meeting in Spoons, it's all about Destination 1850 now.  Definitely one to add to the list.

  2. Oooooh I LOVE that they are open so early! We're on a very early train next week when we go to Edinburgh so I may pop by for a cheeky birthday croissant (do they do croissants?!) and a little phone charge!
